What is the main cause of amenorrhea(absence of menses) And how to treat amenorrhea.

What is Amenorrhea(absence of menses)?

Amenorrhea (uh-men-o-REE-uh) is the absence of menstruation (absence of menses) — one or more missed menstrual periods. Women who have missed at least three menstrual periods in a row have amenorrhea, as do girls who haven’t begun menstruation by age 15.

The most common cause of amenorrhea is pregnancy. Other causes of amenorrhea include problems with the reproductive organs or with the glands that help regulate hormone levels. Treatment of the underlying condition often resolves amenorrhea.

SYMPTOMS OF AMENORRHEA (Absence of menses)

The main sign of amenorrhea is the absence of menstrual periods. Depending on the cause of amenorrhea, you might experience other signs or symptoms along with the absence of periods, such as:

Milky nipple dischargeHair lossHeadacheVision changesExcess facial hairPelvic painAcne

We recommend products we thought will be beneficial to our readers. Purchase through the links will earn us commission. Recommended product here

When to see a doctor

Consult your doctor if you’ve missed at least three menstrual periods in a row, or if you’ve never had a menstrual period and you’re age 15 or older.

CAUSES OF AMENORRHEA (Absence of menses)

Amenorrhea can occur for a variety of reasons. Some are normal during the course of a woman’s life, while others may be a side effect of medication or a sign of a medical problem.

Natural amenorrhea

During the normal course of your life, you may experience amenorrhea for natural reasons, such as:

Pregnancy Breast-feeding Menopause

Contraceptives

Some women who take birth control pills may not have periods. Even after stopping oral contraceptives, it may take some time before regular ovulation and menstruation return. Contraceptives that are injected or implanted also may cause amenorrhea, as can some types of intrauterine devices.

Medications

Certain medications can cause menstrual periods to stop, including some types of:

Antipsychotics Cancer chemotherapy Antidepressants Blood pressure drugs Allergy medications

Lifestyle factors

Sometimes lifestyle factors contribute to amenorrhea, for instance:

Low body weight. Excessively low body weight — about 10 percent under normal weight — interrupts many hormonal functions in your body, potentially halting ovulation. Women who have an eating disorder, such as anorexia or bulimia, often stop having periods because of these abnormal hormonal changes. Excessive exercise. Women who participate in activities that require rigorous training, such as ballet, may find their menstrual cycles interrupted. Several factors combine to contribute to the loss of periods in athletes, including low body fat, stress and high energy expenditure. Stress. Mental stress can temporarily alter the functioning of your hypothalamus — an area of your brain that controls the hormones that regulate your menstrual cycle. Ovulation and menstruation may stop as a result. Regular menstrual periods usually resume after your stress decreases.

Hormonal imbalance

Many types of medical problems can cause hormonal imbalance, including:

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). PCOS causes relatively high and sustained levels of hormones, rather than the fluctuating levels seen in the normal menstrual cycle. Thyroid malfunction. An overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism) or underactive thyroid gland (hypothyroidism) can cause menstrual irregularities, including amenorrhea. Pituitary tumor. A noncancerous (benign) tumor in your pituitary gland can interfere with the hormonal regulation of menstruation. Premature menopause. Menopause usually begins around age 50. But, for some women, the ovarian supply of eggs diminishes before age 40, and menstruation stops.

Structural problems

Problems with the sexual organs themselves also can cause amenorrhea. Examples include:

Uterine scarring. Asherman’s syndrome, a condition in which scar tissue builds up in the lining of the uterus, can sometimes occur after a dilation and curettage (D&C), cesarean section or treatment for uterine fibroids. Uterine scarring prevents the normal buildup and shedding of the uterine lining. Lack of reproductive organs. Sometimes problems arise during fetal development that lead to a girl being born without some major part of her reproductive system, such as her uterus, cervix or vagina. Because her reproductive system didn’t develop normally, she can’t have menstrual cycles. Structural abnormality of the vagina. An obstruction of the vagina may prevent visible menstrual bleeding. A membrane or wall may be present in the vagina that blocks the outflow of blood from the uterus and cervix.

RISK FACTORS

Factors that may increase your risk of amenorrhea may include:

Family history. If other women in your family have experienced amenorrhea, you may have inherited a predisposition for the problem.

Eating disorders. If you have an eating disorder, such as anorexia or bulimia, you are at higher risk of developing amenorrhea.

Athletic training. Rigorous athletic training can increase your risk of amenorrhea.

COMPLICATIONS

Complications of amenorrhea may include:

Infertility. If you don’t ovulate and have menstrual periods, you can’t become pregnant.Osteoporosis. If your amenorrhea is caused by low estrogen levels, you may also be at risk of osteoporosis — a weakening of your bones.

PREPARING FOR YOUR APPOINTMENT

Your first appointment will likely be with your primary care physician or gynecologist.

We recommend products we thought will be beneficial to our readers. Purchase through the links will earn us commission. Recommended product here

Here’s some information to help you prepare for your appointment and know what to expect from your doctor.

What you can do

To get ready for your appointment:

Write down details about your symptoms, including when they started and the date and duration of your last period, if you know when your last period was.

Make note of key medical information, including other conditions for which you’re being treated and the names and dosages of any medications, vitamins or supplements you regularly take.

Review your family history, checking to see whether your mother or any sisters have also had menstrual problems.

Write down questions to ask your doctor, listing the most important ones first in case time runs short.

For amenorrhea, some basic questions to ask your doctor include:

What might be causing me to miss my periods?Do I need any tests? How should I prepare for those tests? What treatments are available? Which do you recommend for me?Do you have any informational brochures on this topic? What websites do you recommend?

What to expect from your doctor

Your doctor will likely ask you a number of questions, such as:

When was your last period? Are you sexually active?Could you be pregnant?Do you use birth control? Are you under any stress?Have you experienced unexplained weight gain or weight loss? How often and how intensely do you exercise?Do you have any other medical conditions?

TESTS AND DIAGNOSIS

During your appointment, your doctor will perform a pelvic exam to check for any problems with your reproductive organs. If you’ve never had a period, your doctor may examine your breasts and genitals to see if you’re experiencing the normal changes of puberty.

Amenorrhea can be a sign of a complex set of hormonal problems. Finding the underlying cause can take time and may require more than one kind of testing.

Lab tests

A variety of blood tests may be necessary, including:

Pregnancy test. This will probably be the first test your doctor suggests, to rule out or confirm a possible pregnancy.Thyroid function test. Measuring the amount of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) in your blood can determine if your thyroid is working properly.Ovary function test. Measuring the amount of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) in your blood can determine if your ovaries are working properly.Prolactin test. Low levels of the hormone prolactin may be a sign of a pituitary gland tumor.Male hormone test. If you’re experiencing increased facial hair and a lowered voice, your doctor may want to check the level of male hormones in your blood.

Hormone challenge test

For this test, you take a hormonal medication for seven to 10 days to trigger menstrual bleeding. Results from this test can tell your doctor whether your periods have stopped due to a lack of estrogen.

Imaging tests

Depending on your signs and symptoms — and the result of any blood tests you’ve had — your doctor might recommend one or more imaging tests, including:

Ultrasound. This test uses sound waves to produce images of internal organs. If you have never had a period, your doctor may suggest an ultrasound test to check for any abnormalities in your reproductive organs.Computerized tomography (CT). CT scans combine many X-ray images taken from different directions to create cross-sectional views of internal structures. A CT scan can indicate whether your uterus, ovaries and kidneys look normal.Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MRI uses radio waves with a strong magnetic field to produce exceptionally detailed images of soft tissues within the body. Your doctor may order an MRI to check for a pituitary tumor.

Scope tests

If other testing reveals no specific cause, your doctor may recommend a hysteroscopy — a test in which a thin, lighted camera is passed through your vagina and cervix to look at the inside of your uterus.

TREATMENTS AND DRUGS

Treatment depends on the underlying cause of your amenorrhea. In some cases, contraceptive pills or other hormone therapies can restart your menstrual cycles. Amenorrhea caused by thyroid or pituitary disorders may be treated with medications. If a tumor or structural blockage is causing the problem, surgery may be necessary.

LIFESTYLE AND HOME REMEDIES

Some lifestyle factors — such as too much exercise or too little food — can cause amenorrhea, so strive for balance in work, recreation and rest. Assess areas of stress and conflict in your life. If you can’t decrease stress on your own, ask for help from family, friends or your doctor.

Be aware of changes in your menstrual cycle and check with your doctor if you have concerns. Keep a record of when your periods occur. Note the date your period starts, how long it lasts and any troublesome symptoms you experience.

Cholesterol and diabetes, how are they related?

What is high cholesterol

High cholesterol is characterized by high amount of cholesterol in the blood.

Cholesterol is a waxy substance found in your blood. Your body needs cholesterol to build healthy cells, but high levels of cholesterol can increase your risk of heart disease. With high cholesterol, you can develop fatty deposits in your blood vessels.

Types of cholesterol

There are two main types of cholesterol: Low-density lipoprotein (LDL), also known as “bad” cholesterol, and high-density lipoprotein (HDL), also known as “good” cholesterol.

  • LDL stands for Low-density lipoprotein which is also known as “bad” cholesterol because a high amount of LDL level leads to buildup of cholesterol in your arteries (atherosclerosis).
  • HDL stands for high-density lipoprotein which is also known as “good” cholesterol because it carries cholesterol from other parts of your body back to your liver. Your liver then removes the cholesterol from your body.

Things that can affect your LDL level

  • Diet. Saturated fat and cholesterol in the food you eat raises your cholesterol level.
  • Weight. Obesity raise your LDL level, lower HDL level, and subsequently increase your total cholesterol level.
  • Physical activity. Reduced physical activity can cause you to gain some weight and may subsequently raise your LDL level.
  • Smoking. Cigarette smoking lowers your HDL cholesterol which may result in an increase in LDL level.
  • Age and sex. As women and men gets older, their cholesterol levels rise.
  • Genetics. Your genes partly determine how much cholesterol your body makes. High cholesterol can run in families. For example, familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is an inherited form of high blood cholesterol.
  • Medicines. Certain medicines, including steroids, some blood pressure medicines, and HIV/AIDS medicines, can raise your LDL level.
  • Other medical conditions. Diseases such as chronic kidney disease, diabetes, and HIV/AIDS can cause a higher LDL level.
  • Race. Certain races may have an increased risk of high blood cholesterol.

What is cholesterol test

A cholesterol test is a blood test which measures the amount of each type of cholesterol and certain fats in your blood. Cholesterol test is highly useful and can help measures:

  • LDL level. Also know as the “bad” cholesterol, LDL is the main source of blockages in the arteries.
  • HDL level. Also known as “good” cholesterol, HDL helps get rid of “bad” LDL cholesterol.
  • Total cholesterol. This is the combined amount of Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol in your blood.
  • Triglycerides. This is a kind of fat found in the blood. It mainly consist of glycerol and fatty acids.
  • VLDL level. Very Low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) is another type of “bad” cholesterol.

Symptoms of high cholesterol

High cholesterol has no symptoms and it requires a medical diagnosis. Some of the common symptoms which may be experienced include:

  • Aortic aneurysm
  • Heart attack
  • Peripheral artery disease
  • Stroke
  • Chest pain

Foods rich in saturated fats

Foods that are rich in saturated fats will raise your cholesterol level to an abnormal level. Some of these foods include:

  • Fatty cuts of meat
  • Full fat diary products (such as milk, cream, cheese, and yogurt
  • Deep fried fast foods
  • Processed foods (such as biscuits and pastries)
  • Takeaway foods (such as hamburgers and pizza)
  • Coconut oil
  • Butter

Cholesterol and diabetes, how are they related?

According to webmd.com diabetes can upset the balance between HDL and LDL cholesterol levels. People with diabetes tend to have LDL particles that stick to arteries and damage blood vessel walls more easily. Glucose (a type of sugar) attaches to lipoprotein (a cholesterol-protien package that enables cholesterol to travel through blood). Sugarcoated LDL remains in the blood stream longer and may help plaque form. People with diabetes can have low HDL and high triglyceride (another kind of blood fat) levels. Both of these boost the risk of heart and artery diseases.

How to reduce high cholesterol naturally

Reducing cholesterol has to do more with your lifestyle. Lifestyle changes can help lower your “bad” cholesterol and improve your high-density cholesterol level. Some of the ways to lowering your cholesterol level include:

  • Eating heart-healthy foods
  • Exercise
  • Quit smoking
  • Lose weight
  • Reduce your alcohol intake

Treatment

High cholesterol treatments include medication, a healthy diet and exercise.

Self-care

  • Physical exercise
  • Low-fat diet

Medication

  • Statin
  • Cholesterol medication

How to reduce metformin side effects

What is metformin?

Metformin is a prescription medicine that comes both as an oral tablet and as an oral solution/syrup

Metformin oral tablet comes as: immediate-release and extended-release metformin.

  • Immediate-release tablets: These tablets have a fast onset of action by going into the system and start acting. They usually have a low plasma protein binding.
Plasma protein bound drugs are not available for action, as a result they are long acting
  • Extended-release tablets: These are pills with slow onset of action that are being released gradually overtime. They have a high plasma protein binding.

Immediate-release metformin is available with the brand name; Glucophage. While the Extended-release metformin is available under the brand names; Glucophage XR, fortamet, and Glumetza.

How does METFORMIN work?

Metformin belongs to the class of drugs that are known as biguanides. It works by:

  • Reducing the amount of glucose(sugar) made by the liver during glycogenolysis (process of breakdown of glycogen)
  • Decrease the amount of glucose absorbed by the body
  • Increase the sensitivity of the body to insulin.

Insulin is a hormone that is involved in the regulation of blood sugar level. It plays the major role of lowering blood glucose level when at a high level above the normal blood glucose level which is usually less than 140mg/dL

We recommend books and products that we thought will be beneficial to our readers. If you purchase anything through our link we earn a commission. Recommended book to read here

What happens if you take metformin without food?

It is of utmost importance to take metformin with meal, though metformin does not stimulate the secretion of insulin but may cause hypoglycaemia if it is taken without food. Its rate of causing hypoglycaemia is low compared to other antidiabetic drugs, but increases when taken in combination with other antidiabetic drugs.

Also it should be taken with food to avoid or reduce stomach or bowel related side effects that may result from not eating.

Immediate-release metformin is taken two or three times daily and should normally be taken with breakfast and dinner. While the Extended-release is usually taken once daily and should normally be taken at night with dinner

Metformin Dosage, dosage for type 2 diabetes

  • Child dosage (ages 10-17 years)

  2. Switch from Immediate-release (IR) metformin to Extended-release (ER) metformin: if you are already using the Immediate-release metformin and you are experiencing some of this side effects, it’s ok to switch from the Immediate-release metformin to the Extended-release metformin due to its slow onset of action and because the Extended-release metformin is coated it’s long acting and is gradually released in the body, therefore the side effects are reduced totally.
  3. Avoid changes in your diet and supplement: avoid sudden changes in your diet and supplements. Your diet decision may influence how the metformin exert its effect.

Exercise is a good thing that our body needs. We need to exercise to keep our body fit and healthy. We need to exercise for at least 30minutes a day in order to be fit and healthy. Exercise according to scientists is good for the overall wellbeing of a human. Our brain and body needs to stay healthy, and how does it gets to be healthy? That’s when exercise came in.

When you exercise for at least 30minutes, mild exercise and a not hard one, you give your body the chance to utilize insulin. Insulin helps your body to make use of the blood sugars/glucose.

Exercise your body to burn some excess body fats and more.

The benefits of excess will be elaborated in the paragraphs to come

How does exercise affect blood sugar?

First what is blood sugar? Blood sugar is the glucose/sugars that are present in the blood. This blood sugars/glucose comes from the food we eat, mostly from carbohydrate. This blood sugar/glucose can be in high level after a meal. When they can not be utilized and are high, they are termed hyperglycemia (increase in blood sugar level). When this blood sugars are abnormally low they are termed hypoglycaemia. Insulin plays the major role in the regulation of this blood glucose.

As a diabetic individual, the insulin is unavailable or unable to to carry out its regulatory function. As a result there will be increased in blood glucose level due to inability of insulin to carry out its regulatory function. But when you exercise, this helps the body to be sensitive to insulin thereby helping the body to make use of the glucose.

But note, don’t engage in a hard exercise, because this will cause you to be hypoglycaemic a condition characterised by decreased blood sugar level.

Covid 19 vaccine (side effects)

COVID-19 vaccines are safe, and getting vaccinated will help protect you against developing severe COVID-19 disease and dying from COVID-19. You may experience some mild side effects after getting vaccinated, which are signs that your body is building protection.

Why it’s normal to have mild side effects from vaccines

Vaccines are designed to give you immunity without the dangers of getting the disease. It’s common to experience some mild-to-moderate side effects when receiving vaccinations. This is because your immune system is instructing your body to react in certain ways: it increases blood flow so more immune cells can circulate, and it raises your body temperature in order to kill the virus.
Mild-to-moderate side effects, like a low-grade fever or muscle aches, are normal and not a cause for alarm: they are signs that the body’s immune system is responding to the vaccine, specifically the antigen (a substance that triggers an immune response), and is gearing up to fight the virus. These side effects usually go away on their own after a few days.

Common and mild or moderate side effects are a good thing: they show us that the vaccine is working. Experiencing no side effects doesn’t mean the vaccine is ineffective. It means everybody responds differently.

Common side effects of COVID-19 vaccines

Like any vaccine, COVID-19 vaccines can cause side effects, most of which are mild or moderate and go away within a few days on their own. As shown in the results of clinical trials, more serious or long-lasting side effects are possible. Vaccines are continually monitored to detect adverse events.

Reported side effects of COVID-19 vaccines have mostly been mild to moderate and have lasted no longer thana few days. Typical side effects include pain at the injection site, fever, fatigue, headache, muscle pain, chills and diarrhoea. The chances of any of these side effects occurring after vaccination differ according to the specific vaccine.

COVID-19 vaccines protect against the SARS-CoV-2 virus only, so it’s still important to keep yourself healthy and well.

Less common side effects

Upon receiving the vaccine, a person should be requested to stay for 15–30 minutes at the vaccination site so health workers are available in case of any immediate reactions. Individuals should alert their local health providers following vaccination if they experience any unexpected side effects or other health events – such as side effects lasting more than three days. Less common side effects reported for some COVID-19 vaccines have included severe allergic reactions such as anaphylaxis; however, this reaction is extremely rare.

National authorities and international bodies, including WHO, are closely monitoring for any unexpected side effects following COVID-19 vaccine use.

Long-term side effects

Side effects usually occur within the first few days of getting a vaccine. Since the first mass vaccination programme started in early December 2020, hundreds of millions of vaccine doses have been administered.

There have been concerns about COVID-19 vaccines making people sick with COVID-19. But none of the approved vaccines contain the live virus that causes COVID-19, which means that COVID-19 vaccines cannot make you sick with COVID-19.

After vaccination, it usually takes a few weeks for the body to build immunity against SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. So it’s possible a person could be infected with SARS-CoV-2 just before or after vaccination and still get sick with COVID-19. This is because the vaccine has not yet had enough time to provide protection.

Experiencing side effects after getting vaccinated means the vaccine is working and your immune system is responding as it should. Vaccines are safe, and getting vaccinated will help protect you against COVID-19.

How does METFORMIN helps control diabetes?

All you need to know about how metformin helps control diabetes

Metformin is a medicine used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes and help reduce of having type 2 diabetes if you are prone to develop it.

Metformin is also used in the prophylaxis of Polcystic Ovary syndrome (PCOS)

Type 2 diabetes is a type of metabolic disease of diabetes whereby the body does not make enough insulin, or the insulin that it makes does not work properly. This cause an increase in blood sugar levels (hyperglycaemia).

Metformin works by lowering your blood sugar levels by improving the way in which your body make use of insulin. Metformin is normally prescribed for diabetes when diet plan and exercise cannot be sufficing to help control your blood sugar levels.

While women with PCOS, metformin helps in lowering the insulin and blood sugar levels, and help in stimulating ovulation. It is available as a prescription drug both in tablets and syrup.

Facts about metformin

Metformin exert its pharmacological effect by reducing the amount of sugar secreted by the liver in the blood. Metformin also helps the body to respond properly to insulin. Insulin is the hormone that helps control the level of sugar in your blood. Metformin is much more effective when taken after a meal due to its high plasma protein binding. And it’s side effect is also been reduced. Common side effects of metformin includes feeling sick, diarrhoea, stomach ache and loss of appetite. Metformin is different from other diabetic drugs, in that it does not cause increase in weight gain e.g Insulin injection.

Metformin can be known by the following brand names: Diagemet, Bolamyn, Glucient, Glucophage, and, Metabet. While the liquid form is called the Riomet.

PRECAUTIONS:
Metformin is not to be taken when a patient is allergic to metformin and when have certain conditions that has to do with liver or kidney diseases and heart attack. A diabetic patient should see the doctor before taking metformin.

How should metformin been taken

Metformin is best taken with meal or immediately after meal because of its high plasma protein binding. Drugs that are bound to plasma protein have a long acting effect.

Metformin Dosage

Daily dose for metformin is usually 2,000mg per day

Type of metformin

Metformin is normally in 2 different types of tablet namely: standard-release tablets and slow-release tablets

Standard-release tablets have a quick onset of action by releasing metformin as fast as possible into the body. This may be taken several times a day.

Slow-release tablets usually a slow onset of action and may have a long acting effect. It is normally taken once per day

What if i missed a dose

If you miss a dose of metformin take the dose at the regular time and do not try to double dose to make up for the missed dose

Ask your doctor and pharmacist on how to take your metformin dose and in case of missed doses.

Side effects of metformin

Common side effects

How to reverse type2 diabetes in (ONE WEEK)

Fact: type2 diabetes can be reversed and controlled completely

Type 2 diabetes can be reversed and controlled completely. Yes that is highly true. One major reason people think type2 diabetes cannot be cured is that they make the mistake of taking medication for a disease that’s mainly a dietary disease. The medication taken for type2 diabetes like insulin injection makes matter worst. Why? Type2 diabetes is greatly influenced by body weight. Insulin injection being prescribed for type2 diabetes cause gain in body weight. This aggravate the condition. This is what makes people think that type2 diabetes is non cureable, reversible and preventable and is a progressive chronic disease of lifetime. Well that’s not true about the dietary disease. Actually type2 diabetes can be reversed and controlled completely.

Fact: too much intake of sugar causes type2 diabetes

High intake of sugar result in type2 diabetes. When we keep taking too much of sugar it gets to a point that our body can no more get rid of this sugars. This condition is termed insulin resistance. When you eat sugar the body secretes the hormone called insulin that help to remove the excess sugar. As you eat more of the sugar more of insulin is been secreted in excess until your body become insulin intolerant. After your body have become insulin resistant, next time you eat sugar your cells cannot make use of the sugars thereby leaving lots of the traveling about in your blood and is called a high blood glucose level or high blood sugar. So this condition cannot be mainly treated with insulin injection why? Because it was too much of the insulin that puts you in this condition so taking an insulin injection will not help in the long run but will rather make the condition worst. As i have said earlier insulin cause increase in body weight and what we want is to lose some body weight. Because our diet plan and lifestyle greatly influence type2 diabetes.

Fact: type2 diabetes affect all the organs in the body

The accumulation of the sugar in the body for a very long period of time leads to the congesting of the organ celss by this sugars. Since the medications taken do not actually get rid of this sugars but instead it keeps cramming them into the cells without utilization. This will cause the roting of the cells or overcramingof these cells that will eventually affects the organs. The taking of medications do not actually get rid of this sugars but rather cram them into the cells that eventually filled up and affects the organs.

Fact: type2 diabetes can be reversed and prevented without any medications

The moment we realize that the cause of type2 diabetes is excess sugar, then we need to pay attention to the amount of sugar that we eat. You need to be cautious that your body cannot make use of those excess sugars you eat, so you have to limit the amount of refined sugars and refined carbohydrates in your diet.

Type2 diabetes can be reversed and prevented in two ways:

  1. Reduce the intake of sugar
  2. Get rid of the excess sugars
  • Reduce the intake of sugar: To much intake of refined sugars and refined carbohydrate will do you no good but harm you. I said earlier that type2 diabetes is caused by sugar, then why consume more sugar? It will be in your best interest to consume more of dietary fat and natural fat and less of carbohydrate and protein. Eating more of dietary and natural fat do not harm your body but rather makes you full without eating any sugar. So start consuming more of dietary fat and natural fat and less of carbohydrate and protein.
  • Get rid of the excess sugar: the second thing you need to do is to get rid of the excess sugar in the body. How do you get rid of the excess sugar in the body? By exercising and fasting. Exercise have be known to help burn the blood sugar and help reduce the glucose level so also fasting. When you fast the body make use of the glucose in the body to generate the energy needed by the body. So the best practice is to exercise regularly and fast for 24 or 16 hours three times per week. This will help burn sugars in the body.

Origin of the term ‘diabetes’

The term diabetes is the shortened version of the full name diabetes mellitus. Diabetes mellitus is derived from the Greek word diabetes meaning siphon – to pass through and the Latin word mellitus meaning honeyed or sweet. This is because in diabetes excess sugar is found in blood as well as the urine. It was known in the 17th century as the “pissing evil”.

The term diabetes was probably coined by Apollonius of Memphis around 250 BC. Diabetes is first recorded in English, in the form diabete, in a medical text written around 1425. It was in 1675 that Thomas Willis added the word “’mellitus’” to the word diabetes. This was because of the sweet taste of the urine. This sweet taste had been noticed in urine by the ancient Greeks, Chinese, Egyptians, Indians, and Persians as is evident from their literature.

History of the treatment of diabetes

Sushruta, Arataeus, and Thomas Willis were the early pioneers of the treatment of diabetes. Greek physicians prescribed exercise – preferably on horseback to alleviate excess urination. Some other forms of therapy applied to diabetes include wine, overfeeding to compensate for loss of fluid weight, starvation diet, etc.

In 1776, Matthew Dobson confirmed that the sweet taste of urine of diabetics was due to excess of a kind of sugar in the urine and blood of people with diabetes.

In ancient times and medieval ages diabetes was usually a death sentence. Aretaeus did attempt to treat it but could not give a good outcome. Sushruta (6th century BCE) an Indian healer identified diabetes and classified it as “Madhumeha”. Here the word “madhu” means honey and combined the term means sweet urine. The ancient Indians tested for diabetes by looking at whether ants were attracted to a person’s urine. The Korean, Chinese, and Japanese words for diabetes are based on the same ideographs which mean “sugar urine disease”.

In Persia Avicenna (980–1037) provided a detailed account on diabetes mellitus in “’The Canon of Medicine”. He described abnormal appetite and the decline of sexual functions along with sweet urine. He also identified diabetic gangrene. Avicenna was the first to describe diabetes insipidus very precisely. It was much later in the 18th and 19th century that Johann Peter Frank (1745–1821) differentiated between diabetes mellitus and diabetes insipidus.

Discovery of the role of the pancreas

Joseph von Mering and Oskar Minkowski in 1889 discovered the role of pancreas in diabetes. They found that dogs whose pancreas was removed developed all the signs and symptoms of diabetes and died shortly afterwards.

In 1910, Sir Edward Albert Sharpey-Schafer found that diabetes resulted from lack of insulin. He termed the chemical regulating blood sugar as insulin from the Latin “insula”, meaning island, in reference to the insulin-producing islets of Langerhans in the pancreas.

Starvation treatment

In 1919 Dr. Frederick Allen of the Rockefeller Institute in New York published his “Total Dietary Regulations in the Treatment of Diabetes” that introduced a therapy of strict dieting or starvation treatment – as a way to manage diabetes.

Discovery of insulin

In 1921 Sir Frederick Grant Banting and Charles Herbert Best repeated the work of Von Mering and Minkowski and went ahead to demonstrate that they could reverse induced diabetes in dogs by giving them an extract from the pancreatic islets of Langerhans of healthy dogs.
Banting, Best, and their chemist colleague Collip purified the hormone insulin from pancreases of cows at the University of Toronto. This led to the availability of an effective treatment for diabetes in 1922. For this, Banting and laboratory director MacLeod received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1923; both shared their Prize money with others in the team who were not recognized, in particular Best and Collip.

Banting and Best made the patent available free of charge so that millions of diabetics worldwide could get access to insulin.

In 1922 January, Leonard Thompson, 14, a charity patient at the Toronto General Hospital, became the first person to receive and injection of insulin to treat diabetes. Thompson lived another 13 years before dying of pneumonia at age 27.

Differentiating type 1 and type 2 diabetes

It was in 1936 that Sir Harold Percival (Harry) Himsworth in his published work differentiated type 1 and 2 diabetes as different entities.

Biosynthetic human insulin

In 1982 the first biosynthetic human insulin – Humulin – that is identical in chemical structure to human insulin and can be mass produced was approved to market in several countries.

Metabolic syndrome

Metabolic syndrome, that diabetes mellitus forms a part of was discovered by Dr Gerald Reaven’s in 1988. Banting was honored by World Diabetes Day which is held on his birthday, November 14 staring 2007.

Diabetes complications start at pre-diabetes blood sugar levels

Everything you need to know about diabetes mellitus, type1 and type2 diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is preventable and and can be reversed. Type 2 diabetes is not as chronic and lifetime disease that many have thought it to be. It is more of a dietary and lifestyle disease. Does not require more of the medication which every diabetic patients are on. This medication at onset were the cause of such conditions. Take for example when we eat too much of sugar more insulin is been secreted in the body. This insulin helps is in lowering the blood glucose level. When we eat too much of the sugar more and more insulin is secreted until our bodies become insulin intolerant. So the administration of the insulin injection will just temporary help the condition.

Types of diabetes

Type 1 diabetes: type 1 diabetes is genetic and can occur before the age of 40. Normally occurs in childhood.

Treatment

  1. Daily injection of insulin
  2. Healthy diet
  3. Exercise

Type 2 diabetes: Type 2 is not genetic and normally occurs after the age of 40 but can also in childhood.

Treatment

  1. Healthy diet
  2. Exercise (highly recommended)
  3. Medication

Pre-diabetes

A pre-diabetic patient is an individual who is yet diabetic but has a high amout of glucose level in the blood and may subsequently develop type 2 diabetes.

Factors that causes pre-diabetes
Increased risk factors:

  1. Family history of type 2 diabetes
  2. Body overweight
  3. Medical history of high blood pressure, heart attack, or stroke
  4. Woman with polcystic ovary syndrome
  5. Woman with history of gestational diabetes
  6. Severe mental health issues
    Pre-diabetes is usually asymptomatic

Prevention of pre-diabetes

  1. Healthy diet
  2. Exercise

Gestational diabetes

This usually affects pregnant women and is characterized by increased blood glucose level that result from some of the hormones required for the development of the baby interfering with the mothers ability to utilize glucose.

Complications of gestational diabetes

  1. Perinatal death
  2. Pre-eclampsia: convulsion that affects pregnant women
  3. Macrosmia: characterized by the unborn baby utilizing the maternal excess glucose that result in an increase in the baby size
  4. Neonatal hypoglycemia: low blood sugar level in a newborn baby
  5. Increased risk of obesity and diabetes

Treatment

Healthy diet

Health complications associated with diabetes

  1. Blindness
  2. Kidney disease
  3. Heart disease and stroke
  4. High blood pressure
  5. Neuropathy
  6. Amputation

Relationship between diabetes and obesity

Being obesed has been found that an individual have a greater demand of insulin for the body to be able utilize glucose. Being obesed does not necessarily mean an individual will have type2 diabetes. But an obesed individual is at higher risk of developing a type2 diabetes. When an individual is obesed the fat cells contain some proteins that are insulin resistant and greater amount of must be needed to make use of the glucose in the blood.

Common symptoms of type1 and type2 diabetes

  1. Frequent feeling of thirst
  2. Frequent need to urinate throughout the day, also during the night
  3. Tiredness and an ongoing feeling of fatigue
  4. Unintentional weight lose, and loss of muscle fat
  5. Dry mouth
  6. Blurry vision
  7. Itchy skin, in the genital region
  8. Frequent vaginal infections in women and/or yeast infections in men and women
  9. Prolonged healing process for minor cuts or sores
  10. Cramps
  11. Constipation

Pathophysiology of diabetes

The pancrease os both an exocrine and endocrine gland that secrets both the two hormones that plays the major role in the body utilization of glucose. The two hormones include:

  1. Insulin
  2. Glucagon
  1. Insulin is the hormone that causes the decrease in blood sugar level. In a diabetic condition insulin is unable to perform its function of reducing blood glucose level. As a result there is an excess in blood sugar level in the blood that rise to a dangerous level , a conditioned termed hyperglycemia (excess blood sugar).
On a normal condition blood glucose are supposed to be utilized by the body and been stored for future use as body fuel. But since insulin can not carry out its function, the glucose are left in the blood and subsequently rise to a dangerous level, a condition termed diabetes.
  2. Glucagon: this is the hormone that help increases blood glucose. This hormone carries out its effect when the body is in a starved state. Stores glycogen in the liver are broke down into glucose by glucagon to serve as fuel for the body.
In a starved state there is an increase in activity of glucagon that result in an increase in blood glucose level, increase in lipolysis, and increased fatty acids oxidation and subsequently production of ketone bodies.

Medical term

  1. Hyperglycemia: This is a condition characterised by increased blood glucose level
  2. Hypoglycemia: This is a condition characterised by decreased blood glucose level

Beating diabetes

An individual diagnosed with type1 diabetes may be faced with daily injection of insulin for a lifetime.
An individual diagnosed with type2 diabetes can manage and control it by their diet plan, exercise and some medication but not for a lifetime compared to a type2 diabetic patient.
Prediabetes can be prevented ans type 2 diabetes can be reversed by following a healthy diet plan and lifestyle.

Things you should know and pay attention to:

  1. The kind of foods you eat
  2. The amount of food you eat
  3. How frequent should you eat

Carbohydrate rich foods or fat rich foods?

Should you be eating carbohydrate rich foods or fat rich foods? It’s highly recommended for a diabetic patient to consume more of fat rich foods because your body can utilize the fats buy not much of the carbohydrate.

Biochemistry behind eating fat rich food to carbohydrate rich food

When a diabetic patient eats a carbohydrate rich food the glucose which is the main sugar/carbohydrate must be broken down for utilization by the body tissues. In a diabetic individual this mechanism of breathing down the blood glucose is not functioning property.
The body does this by going through a pathway called the glycolytic pathway (breakdown of glucose) to form pyruvate which is converted to Acetyl CoA. Acetyl CoA is channelled into TCA/ Citric acid cycle to produce energy needed by the body. All the above process occurs in order to utilize the blood glucose, under the influence of insulin. This process doesn’t function properly in a diabetic individual.
If a diabetic individual consume much of fat rich foods and little carbohydrate foods, the faty acids are being utilized by the body through the following step:

  1. The fatty acids in the food are being mobilized and trabsported into the tissues. This fatty acids are been mobilized and are transported into the body tissues or adipocytes.
  2. On reaching the adipocytes the fatty acids are been activated in the in the cytosol(cytoplasm) of the adipocytes and are being transported into the mitochondrial mayrix of adipocytes.
  3. The fatty acids oxidation takes place inside the mitochondrial matrix. The involves the breaking down of the fatty acids into Acetyl CoA. This Acetyl CoA are then being channelled into TCA/Citric acid cycle to generate energy needed by the body.

What should you eat then?

Foods containing more of fats and little carbohydrate

What you should not eat

Foods containing more of carbohydrate without fat.

We have come to the end of the things you should know about diabetes mellitus, type1 and type2 diabetes. Diabetes specifically pre-diabetes and type2 diabetes can be prevented and reversed completely. Not as a progressive and chronic disease many thought.
