What are the symptoms of high and low blood pressure? And how to identify them

Blood pressure is the lateral pressure exerted on the wall of arteries by a flowing blood.

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension. Is a condition characterised by increased blood pressure to a abnormal level. This has to do with the lateral pressure exerted by a flowing blood on the wall of the arteries. This occur as a result of narrowing of the the blood vessels thereby causing an increase resistance to blood flow by the arteries.

While low blood pressure, also known as hypotension is a condition characterised by a decreased blood blood pressure. This occur as a result of widening of the blood vessels thereby causing a decrease resistance to blood by the arteries, thus a low blood pressure occurs.

Difference between high and low blood pressure

  • High blood pressure has a high pressure exerted on the walls of the arteries while low blood pressure has a low pressure exerted on the walls of the arteries
  • High blood pressure occurs as a result of narrowing of the blood vessels while low blood pressure occurs as a result of widening of the blood vessels
  • High blood pressure is also known as hypertension while low blood pressure is also known as hypotension

What causes high blood pressure?

The causes of high blood pressure is not certain but there are some factors that are attributed to the cause of high blood pressure and the include:

  • Smoking
  • Obesity
  • Too much of alcohol
  • Too much of salt intake
  • Diabetes
  • Stress
  • Genetics
  • Ageing

What causes low blood pressure?

The causes of low blood pressure include:

  • bloodstreams infection
  • Diabetes
  • Thyroid
  • Blood loss due to injury
  • Weakness due to dehydration and
  • Pregnancy

Symptoms of high blood pressure (hypertension)

High blood pressure do not usually have a symptom, but people with a high blood pressure may experience some of the followings like lack of sleep (insomnia), sweating and anxiety.

Symptoms of low blood pressure (hypotension)

The symptoms if low blood pressure (hypotension) include:

  • Unsteadiness
  • Blurry vision
  • Lack of concentration
  • Fatigue
  • Depression
  • Nausea
  • Pale skin
  • Rapid and slow breathing
